A member of our SCOPE Fam, McKenna H., who is currently working for LabCorp Laboratory has introduced to me a non-profit organization called Be The Match. This organization has been able to create the world's most diverse marrow registry and strive every day to save lives through marrow transplant. Every year, thousands of people are diagnosed with life-threatening blood cancers such as leukemia and lymphoma, and Be The Match's mission is to help cure these diseases through marrow donation for the last 30 years.
Currently LabCorp, who partners with the National Marrow Donor Program, are looking for more people from ethnic backgrounds to sign up for the registry. Of course, all backgrounds are hugely welcomed as well.
Here are the steps to potentially save a life:
- Register on BeTheMatch (https://bethematch.org/labcorp/) and fill out the questionnaire regarding your medical history.
- Once your application is processed and accepted, you'll be asked to do a swab test to determine your HLA type and enter into the registry.
- All you have to do then is wait to be matched.
- If identified as a match, then you'll be contacted to donate.
The process has been created to be convenient and simple for us to encourage more people to be involved and join the fight in fighting blood diseases. If you have the ability to donate, please consider checking this organization out!
Thank you so much for reading this blog.
